Workshop I

Creating Scientific images with subconscious appeal
by H. Adam Steinberg
email: adam@steinbergs.us

In this workshop I draw on twenty years’ experience to demonstrate the techniques used in creating effective and compelling scientific images. You will learn how to visually distill and process your data in ways that helps the reader intuitively follow the story you are telling.

So that you will never feel lost in a graphics program ever again, you will learn about
• audience • color • composition • control • direction • defaults • depth • flow • focus • humor • simplification • story

In this workshop you will learn the principles necessary to

  • create images that draw a reader into the story
  • create images that make your data easier to understand
  • organize your images in ways that help facilitate comprehension
  • illustrate a concise narrative in a manner consistent with the story
  • choose statistical formats that most effectively relate data to the reader
  • make data and images complementary
  • demonstrate central themes concisely
